New to the literature?

Begin with one overview, then follow your question.

The CHERI architecture has changed materially over time. Foundational papers explain the design ideas, while newer papers better represent current architectures and software experience. Do not treat publication count as evidence; match architecture, ABI, implementation, workload and threat model.

Theme 01

Architecture and deployment

Use these works to understand the capability model, deployment trade-offs and experience taking CHERI into a high-performance Arm platform.

IEEE S&P · 2015Foundational

CHERI: A Hybrid Capability-System Architecture for Scalable Software Compartmentalization

Robert N. M. Watson, Jonathan Woodruff, Peter G. Neumann and colleagues

Introduces the hybrid capability-system architecture and its case for scalable protection-domain crossing. Use it for foundational design rationale; check newer specifications for current instruction behavior.

Best for
Architecture foundations and compartment design

CHERI Concentrate: Practical Compressed Capabilities

Jonathan Woodruff, Alexandre Joannou, Hongyan Xia and colleagues

Explains the compressed capability representation used to make bounds and permissions practical within a fixed-width capability. Important when reasoning about representable bounds and allocation alignment.

Best for
Capability encoding and bounds precision

Connect the scheme to the target architecture’s current specification
IEEE Micro · 2023Evaluation platform

The Arm Morello Evaluation Platform—Validating CHERI-Based Security in a High-Performance System

Richard Grisenthwaite, Graeme Barnes, Robert N. M. Watson and colleagues

Describes the high-performance Morello processor, SoC and board used for industrial-scale experimentation. Use it to understand the platform, not as evidence of current commercial Arm product support.

Best for
High-performance prototype integration
Watch
Morello is an evaluation platform

Theme 02

Software and C/C++ memory safety

These papers connect architectural capabilities to a process ABI, compiler semantics and a complete operating-system environment.

ASPLOS · 2019Operating systems

CheriABI: Enforcing Valid Pointer Provenance and Minimizing Pointer Privilege in the POSIX C Run-time Environment

Brooks Davis, Robert N. M. Watson, Alexander Richardson and colleagues

Shows how all userspace pointers can be capabilities and how the kernel can interact with process memory through explicitly delegated authority. A central paper for understanding pure-capability CheriBSD.

Best for
Pure-capability ABI and OS enforcement
Watch
Match results to the architecture and CheriBSD revision
ASPLOS · 2024Language semantics

Formal Mechanised Semantics of CHERI C: Capabilities, Undefined Behaviour, and Provenance

Vadim Zaliva, Kayvan Memarian, Ricardo Almeida and colleagues

Provides a mechanised account of CHERI C pointer behavior, provenance and undefined behavior. Use it when compiler or language claims require more than an informal programming guide.

Best for
C semantics, provenance and compiler reasoning
Watch
Formal model scope is narrower than whole-program security
IEEE Security & Privacy · 2024Current overview

CHERI: Hardware-Enabled C/C++ Memory Protection at Scale

Robert N. M. Watson, David Chisnall, Jessica Clarke and colleagues

Connects the mature CHERI protection model with Morello and CHERIoT experience. Useful for a compact, current explanation before reading narrower evaluations.

Best for
Decision-maker and engineer orientation
Watch
Overview claims still need workload-specific evidence

Theme 03

Embedded systems, compartments and accelerators

Use these papers for low-cost embedded systems and for extending compartmentalisation beyond the main CPU.

MICRO · 2023Embedded architecture

CHERIoT: Complete Memory Safety for Embedded Devices

Saar Amar, David Chisnall, Tony Chen and colleagues

Presents the CHERIoT hardware-software design for small embedded systems, including fine-grained compartments and temporal-safety mechanisms within constrained resources.

Best for
CHERIoT architecture and embedded trade-offs
Watch
CHERIoT is a distinct embedded profile
SOSP · 2025Embedded operating system

CHERIoT RTOS: An OS for Fine-Grained Memory-Safe Compartments on Low-Cost Embedded Devices

Saar Amar, Tony Chen, David Chisnall and colleagues

Examines an RTOS built around small mutually distrusting compartments, sealed objects and explicit authority. Useful for system structure, recovery and supply-chain isolation questions.

Best for
Embedded OS and compartment lifecycle
Watch
Published system configuration matters to comparisons
ISCA · 2025Accelerators

Adaptive CHERI Compartmentalization for Heterogeneous Accelerators

Jianyi Cheng, A. Theodore Markettos, Alexandre Joannou and colleagues

Studies capability checking across heterogeneous accelerators. Use it when the trust boundary crosses CPU, accelerator and shared-memory interfaces.

Best for
Heterogeneous systems and accelerator authority
Watch
Transfer results only to comparable accelerator and memory models

Theme 04

Formal modelling and assurance

These works explain how executable ISA models and mechanised proofs inform CHERI design and implementation confidence.

ESOP · 2022Security proof

Verified Security for the Morello Capability-Enhanced Prototype Arm Architecture

Thomas Bauereiss, Brian Campbell, Thomas Sewell and colleagues

Develops and proves security properties for the Morello capability architecture model. Use it to understand design-time architectural assurance and the precise assumptions behind the proof.

Best for
Morello architectural security properties
Watch
Separate architecture proof from SoC, firmware and application assurance

Theme 05

Temporal memory safety

Bounds stop out-of-range access; temporal safety addresses capabilities that outlive the allocation they once referred to.

IEEE S&P · 2020Heap temporal safety

Cornucopia: Temporal Safety for CHERI Heaps

Nathaniel Wesley Filardo, Brett F. Gutstein, Jonathan Woodruff and colleagues

Introduces a heap temporal-safety approach using CHERI capabilities. Read it with the later Reloaded paper to understand both the original design and subsequent improvements.

Best for
Foundational heap temporal-safety design
Watch
Prefer the later work for the refined mechanism
ASPLOS · 2024Load barriers

Cornucopia Reloaded: Load Barriers for CHERI Heap Temporal Safety

Nathaniel Wesley Filardo, Brett F. Gutstein, Jonathan Woodruff and colleagues

Refines the earlier Cornucopia approach with load barriers. Use the methods and benchmark section when comparing performance and allocator integration.

Best for
Current heap temporal-safety research
Watch
Results depend on allocator, workload and target

Using the library

Turn reading into evidence.

  1. Write the claim.State what you need to know before choosing a paper.
  2. Match the system.Record architecture, ABI, implementation, release and workload.
  3. Inspect the method.Check baseline, threat model, measurements, proof assumptions and artefacts.
  4. Find later work.Look for superseding specifications, replications, refinements and contradictory evidence.
  5. Transfer carefully.List every material difference between the study and your product.
