Run CHERI in simulation
Simulation lets developers build and run CHERI software without a physical board.
What you’ll do
Simulation lets developers build and run CHERI software without a physical board. Full-system emulators such as QEMU-CHERI are useful for operating-system and application work; architectural models may be better for specification-focused experiments.
Before you begin
Simulation is often the fastest route to a repeatable team environment and automated tests.
Steps
1. Match the model
Choose a simulator that supports the required architecture, platform devices, ABI and software image.
2. Automate
Script image creation, boot, program deployment and expected output so the test can run in continuous integration.
3. Interpret
Separate functional correctness from timing, power, peripheral and microarchitectural behaviour that simulation may not represent.
Check your result
Functional simulation cannot establish hardware performance or physical-system behaviour, and model status may lag a supplier implementation.
Record the architecture, platform, ABI, release, source revision and complete commands. A second developer should be able to reproduce the result.
