Overview

Morello is Arm’s experimental CHERI technology demonstrator: a prototype architecture, SoC, board, model and software ecosystem for application-class evaluation. It is especially useful for CheriBSD and rich-system research.

Use Morello when the research value of its application-class prototype and CheriBSD ecosystem outweighs its age and demonstrator status. Do not select it as evidence of a current production Arm roadmap; select it for the specific software, research and teaching work it can still support.

Best fit

Morello made it possible to study CHERI using large software stacks and physical high-performance prototype silicon.

What to evaluate

1. Use case

Choose it for research, teaching, software porting and security evaluation where the Morello architecture is appropriate.

2. Software

Use matched firmware, CheriBSD or other supported stack, Morello LLVM and documentation.

3. Access

Check current board distribution, loan conditions, models and support before planning work.

Check current status

Morello is a prototype, not a production Arm product. Its microarchitecture and ABI should not be used as universal CHERI baselines.

Verify availability, maturity, specifications, software support and lifecycle terms with the current platform owner before procurement.

Provider and project sources

Try it

Confirm access and software versions, then reproduce a current CheriBSD or supported Morello example.
