What you’ll do

Hardware development adds firmware, storage, peripherals, boot flow and physical recovery to the CHERI software environment. Begin with a validated image and board procedure before changing the application or gateware.

Before you begin

A disciplined bring-up process prevents board, image, cable and toolchain problems from being mistaken for capability faults.

Steps

1. Prepare

Record the board revision, power and debug connections, supported image, flashing method and recovery procedure.

2. Validate

Boot an unchanged reference image and capture console, firmware and platform version information.

3. Iterate

Change one layer at a time, keep a known-good image and log capability faults with the exact binary and source revision.

Check your result

Development boards and prototype platforms may have limited supply, experimental interfaces or software that is not intended for production.

Record the architecture, platform, ABI, release, source revision and complete commands. A second developer should be able to reproduce the result.
