Overview

Sonata is lowRISC’s open FPGA development platform for evaluating CHERIoT-Ibex as a microcontroller for embedded, IoT and operational-technology applications. The board design, FPGA system, software and documentation are open source.

Best fit

It is well suited to teaching, prototyping, peripheral integration and early CHERIoT software work before custom silicon.

What to evaluate

1. Board

Use the published board revision, interfaces and supported FPGA tool flow.

2. Release

Use one published Sonata system release with the matching software branch, bitstream, bootloader and examples.

3. Transition

Identify which software, interfaces and assumptions can carry from FPGA to a target microcontroller or SoC.

Check current status

FPGA performance, power and resource use do not predict final silicon directly. Sonata is an evaluation and development platform, not a production microcontroller.

Verify availability, maturity, specifications, software support and lifecycle terms with the current platform owner before procurement.

Provider and project sources

Try it

Complete the maintained getting-started example, then attach one representative peripheral or compartmentalised component.
